It is three years after the second launch of the aethership "Excelsior"; the Ettercap War has ended and Trowth has returned to a traumatized semblance of normalcy, but is now menaced by an unseen adversary. A terrifying, merciless hand has seized control of the heresies in Trowth, and is using them to bring down the Empire itself. The city's unsung hero--diseased, drug-addicted, Detective Inspector Elijah Beckett--is the only man who can save Trowth from herself, but his own mind and body have begun an inexorable spiral into decay, from which he may never be able to recover.

Chris Braak's second novel, Mr. Stitch, is another winner that transports to reader to a gothic world of steampunkian adventure.

The book continues the affairs of detective Elijah Beckett, as he tries to put an end to the spread of heretical science, while battlig high-profile terrorists, at the expense of a drug addiction that consumes his life.

This is a fun read for anyone who enjoys steampunk novels. Braak has put a lot of effort into creating a very distinct setting, the city of Trowth, and it really draws the reader in with its claustrophobic architecture, sprawling both above and below ground. The city is as dense as Braak's writing.

While the paperback is only 240+ pages, it reads like a 400 pager, because of the amount of detail on every page. This is offset by concise chapters that are generally only a few pages, but pack a punch.

I enjoyed this book more than the first, because I was already accustomed to the way it's written. Braak has spent some time researching every detail in the fictional world, choosing to replace things such as gasoline with phlogiston, a debunked theory of combustion from the 1600's. I found myself looking up a lot of these tidbits in order to fully understand what was going on in the book, so it made for a challenging experience initially. The metaphors for modern day civilization are fairly to pick out however.

The supporting characters are much deeper in the second book. You really get to know who they are and how they think, so it was very effective in that area. The city is also much more alive, as the novel focuses more on the supporting characters and their interaction within the city limits.

Overall, a great second effort from a talented writer. It should be noted, that you should read the first book `The Translated Man' before picking up this one.

For fans of Dr. Who, HP Lovecraft, Mary Shelley, Sherlock Holmes

Mr Stitch Chris Braak 9780982888414 Books Reviews

Mr. Stitch is an extremely worthy sequel to The Translated Man, with the same colorful characters, and an equally interesting mystery. But this time the main character Beckett is starting to lose his touch, and Skinner has been let go from the Coroners because they don't employ women anymore. Danger is everywhere. If you start to get worried about the safety and survival of the main characters--keep worrying! This one is a real knuckle biter. Chris Braak is an original writer and happily you cannot count on him to serve up a staid, predictable ending to this highly unusual story. This book has a bit of a nihilist theme, where between the action the characters have to worry about what is the meaning of their lives if the foundations of everything that they believed in has been ripped away.

I read this in plain old print book form, so there were no technical problems. Like The Translated Man, Mr. Stitch had a few typos (including one on the first page--ouch!), but the writing was of such a high quality that I wasn't really fussed about it. Honestly, I think this was one of the best science fiction books of 2010, which is quite a feat for a self-published book. And, no, I haven't read all the sf books published in 2010, but who has? I would advise starting this series with The Translated Man, because there's a lot going on here in the world of Trowth and I think it might be a little bit confusing to begin reading in the middle.
not as good as translated man in my opinion, but its $5. more entertaining than a movie *AND* its cheaper. really no excuse *not* to pick it up.
an exellent sequel to "the translated man", and an even more engaging story, marred, alas, by some rather dreadful editing, at least in the kindle edition.
Both of Mr. Braak's books were immensly enjoyable. The character's of Valentine Vie-Gorgon and Elizabeth Skinner were both were fleshed out and likable. Elijah Beckett, a figure tourtured both in body and soul, was particularly well thought out. Bravo Mr. Braak!
